Harold K. “Tinker” Knies, 88, formerly of Hazleton, passed away Friday morning at Heritage Hill, Weatherly where he was a resident. Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late Harry and Sophia (Sterba) Knies.

As a child, Harold was nicknamed “Tinker” because he was always “tinkering” with things. Tinker’s love for sports, especially basketball, started in school, where he was part of the 1949 Hazleton High School Eastern League Championship Basketball Team. After high school, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed at Cape May, New Jersey, and New Bedford, Massachusetts.

After serving his country, he graduated from East Stroudsburg State Teacher’s College with a B.S. in Physical Education. Tinker then enjoyed the next 39 years teaching, most of which was in the Hazleton area. Being the kind soul that he was, he worked with challenged children for 19 years of his teaching career. He also coached basketball and other sports at several levels locally, including a stint as head coach at Hazle Township High School.

Tinker was a real caregiver and took great care of other family members in their time of need. He also loved caring for all types of animals, especially his Beagle dogs. Tinker also enjoyed meeting with friends in Hazleton for a cup of coffee.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his brother Robert Knies and sister Lois Knies Russel.

He is survived by and will be missed by his nephews and nieces: Nancy Larned, Lori DiBarnaba, Susan Neagle, Robert Russel III, Robert Knies and Laurie Isaacson and all their families.

His funeral burial service will be held on Wednesday, August 19th, at 11 A.M. in Vine Street Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. M. Jane Hess officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hazleton Animal Shelter, PO Box 481, Hazleton, PA 18201

Special thanks to the staff and residents at Heritage Hill who took care of him and became his friends over the past few years and to the staff at Family Pillars Hospice.
