Richard N. Roman age 52, died on Saturday evening at his residence in Sand Springs, in the presence of his loving family.

Richard was born in Hazleton and attended school in the Hazleton Area School District. He graduated from Hazleton in 1991 and continued his education and graduated from Penn State, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Rich was a licensed professional engineer in PA since 2002.  Rich has served as the District Executive for PennDOT’s Engineering District 4 since January 2019. Prior to joining the Bureau, Rich worked in Engineering District 8-Harrisburg for 16 years.  He served as the Assistant District Executive for Maintenance; Design Services Engineer; and various civil engineering capacities starting in 1998.

Rich belongs to Our Lady of Peace Parish at our Lady of Grace Church where he served as a parish lector.
Rich was a hardworking and devoted man who cherished the simple joys of his life. Rich cherished his family and friends and he lived for spending time with them. Family meant everything to rich. He leaves behind his loving parents, Deacon Robert and Dolores Roman, his best friend and loyal brother Robert Roman, loving sister-in-law, Sherry Roman, his cherished niece, the light of his life, Hayley Roman.  Rich is survived by many cousins and close friends who were like family to him.

Rich was the happiest when surrounded by those he loved the most. Whether it was family dinners, watching Penn State Football or heading out to Pittsburgh to cheer on the Steelers. Some of his favorite memories were made during those trips, filled with laughter, excitement and the bond only family can share. When he wasn’t watching the games, rich could be found bowling or dreaming about his next vacation to Jamaica, his favorite get away spot, where he found peace and sunshine.

Rich will always be remembered for his easy-going spirit, his amazing sense of humor and the way he could make any moment better by just being there. He touched the lives and hearts of many and leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty and joy that will never be forgotten.

His viewing will be held Thursday evening, November 6th, from 6-8 P.M. at the Joseph A. Moran Funeral Home, 229 W. 12th St., Hazleton. As well, as Friday morning, November 7th, in the funeral home from 8:45-9:30 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 A.M. in Our Lady of Peace Parish at Our Lady of Grace Church, Hazleton.

The family invites all who knew and loved Rich to come together, share stories and honor the incredible man he was.

Forever in our hearts, gone too soon. But, never forgotten.

My heartfelt condolences to Rich’s family and friends. I had the privilege of getting to know Rich when he began serving as the District 4 Executive, and over the years, we collaborated on several projects. Rich was not only an exceptional leader but also an outstanding person. Whenever we needed his support, he was always there for us and never let us down. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone during this difficult time.

I extend my deepest condolences to the Roman Family, their extended family, friends, and colleagues during this time full of grief. I hope you find peace, warmth, and joy in this time, and the time before the holidays. Despite my inability to be present for such a loving funeral and viewing, I kept the whole of the Roman Family in my thoughts and prayers, and my heart goes out to them. May you all find joy in the memory of Mr. Richard Roman and that his love extends to you, even from God's Kingdom. I will think of Mr. Richard Roman every time I see his colleagues in their Orange Vests or the Orange Signs on 476 on my journeys home this holiday season and whenever I drive on the roads of our Commonwealth, as he truly helped keep our roads and infrastructure safe. My love to all, and I will continue to hold you in my thoughts and prayers.

I was saddened to hear of Rich's untimely passing. I always appreciated his leadership, positive outlook, and our conversations about our shared experiences at Penn State. He was always quick with a joke and brought a positive energy to a room. Professionally, I was always appreciative of how he was able to focus project teams to solve problems for the good of the communities that he served. His impact to and leadership within PennDOT and the engineering community in Pennsylvania will be missed.

Having worked with Rich on PennDOT projects was always productive and forward looking. Rich had a positive outlook and was an excellent engineer.
