Salvadore N. Merola, 56 of Pardeesville passed away Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest surrounded with close family by his side. Sal was diagnosed with cancer only a short time ago and put up a courageous fight up until the very end.
Born in Hazleton, he was the son of Philomena (Hnasko) Merola and the late Salvadore J. Merola. Sal was devoted to his faith and his family, a cherished friend to many, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and love. Known for his easy-going nature and quick-witted sense of humor and hard work ethic. He was a great Dad and loved both of his son’s. He always wanted the best for them.
Sal was taken from us far too soon and will be missed by anyone who had the great pleasure of knowing him. Those who knew him probably have a few good stories to tell that could make anyone laugh. Along with his humor he also expressed empathy to those in need and would have helped anyone at any time of the day. No problem was too big or small for him, he was just one call away he would always say. “A true heart of gold”
Sal was a diesel mechanic at Stroehmann’s bakery for 10 years and also owned his own business for 30 years which is where he taught his skills to Sal Jr. at Merola’s Garage. He operated Sal’s Septic Service for the last 10 years after taking it over from his father. Sal worked long hour days, when he wasn’t working, he was spending time with his son Sal jr. on various projects which some may call work but to them it was just time spent together between father and son. Sal also enjoyed cooking and grilling and was very good at that as well.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are sons Salvadore Merola III and his wife Valerie, Antonio Merola; step daughter Jennifer Haberle and her husband Ben; sister Philomena Amato and her companion Mark Dispirito; niece Leah Amato; and several cousins.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 10th, at 10 A.M. in Queen of Heaven Parish at Our Lady of Grace Church, Hazleton. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 9th, at the Joseph A. Moran Funeral Home, 229 W. 12th St. Hazleton from 4-7 P.M.
